Dock Planning
How do I choose the right loading dock equipment for my facility?
There are many factors to consider, such as the type of trucks you handle, frequency of use, dock height, and safety needs. The Metro Dock Sales team can help assess your requirements and recommend the best solution.
How do I determine the capacity for a dock leveler?
The dock leveler capacity must account for both static and dynamic loads. To ensure safety, choose a dock leveler with a capacity rating higher than the combined expected loads. What you need to consider:
CAPACITY: The total weight of load, plus weight of handling equipment.
DOCK HEIGHT: Used to determine operating grade percentage of ramp from trailer height differential.
FREQUENCY: What is the number of shifts and trucks per day?
General Application Conditions: A single shift, servicing up to seven trucks per day, dock operating grade does not exceed 5-7%, forklift speed does not exceed 4mph (6km/h).
EXAMPLE: To calculate the safest dock capacity for light to normal usage, use a 2.5 safety factor (calculated capacity x 2.5)
1 SHIFT: 10,000 lb. forklift weight + 5,000 lb. load = 15,000 lb. x 2.5 = 37,500 lb. >> 40,000 lb. CAPACITY
2 SHIFT: 10,000 lb. forklift weight + 5,000 lb. load = 15,000 lb. x 3.0 = 45,000 lb. >> 45,000 lb. CAPACITY
3 SHIFT: 10,000 lb forklift weight + 5,000 lb. load = 15,000 lb. x 3.5 = 52,000 lb. >> 60,000 lb. CAPACITY
What is the difference between static and dynamic capacity?
Static: The amount of non-moving weight the dock leveler can support. The capacity rating shows the maximum weight the dock leveler can handle without causing any damage.
Dynamic: The force applied to the dock leveler when a moving load reaches it at an angle. This force increases as the slope becomes steeper, which depends on the height difference between the cross traffic and the trailer.

Loading Dock Equipment
How do I maintain my dock leveler?
Refer to the owner’s manual for maintenance requirements and contact an authorized Metro Dock dealer in your area for periodic inspections by a certified technician.
What is a vertical storing dock leveler?
A Vertical Storing Dock Leveler stores vertically when not in use, providing a clear dock opening and improving environmental control.
What are the benefits of a vertical storing dock leveler?
A Vertical Storing Dock Leveler enhances safety, improves temperature control, and minimizes contamination by allowing dock doors to fully close when not in use.
What does interlock mean?
Hydraulic dock levelers can be interlocked to other components of loading dock equipment, such as vehicle restraints and overhead doors. When interlocked to a vehicle restraint, the dock leveler cannot operate unless the trailer is properly restrained.
What is a vehicle restraint and why do I need one?
A vehicle restraint secures a trailer at the loading dock to prevent premature departure or trailer creep, enhancing dock safety.
What types of vehicle restraints does Metro Dock offer?
Metro Dock offers both an electric hook restraint and a hydraulic vehicle restraint.
Seals & Shelters
What is the purpose of door seals and truck shelters?
Door seals and truck shelters create a weather-tight barrier between the dock and the trailer, protecting goods from environmental elements and improving energy efficiency.
What is the difference between a dock seal and a truck shelter?
The door seal is a compression-type seal; trucks reverse and compress the foam in the seal, making a tight closure. The truck shelter is made of a wood (or optional metal) structure with no foam components. The sides and top are constructed of vinyl flaps. As a truck reverses directly into the shelter opening, the flaps bend to form a seal completely around the exterior of the truck.
What is an inflatable shelter?
Inflatable shelters fit around a door opening to create a tight seal between the building wall and the trailer. They are inflated to prevent energy loss and maintain internal temperatures.
How do I choose the right dock seal for my site?
To assist with product selection, Metro Dock provides a simple Dock Seal Approval Form that covers considerations such as dock height, bumper projection, door opening size, and access needs.
Loading Dock Safety & Accessories
What is a light communication package?
A light communication system provides visual signals to both dock workers and truck drivers, indicating when it is safe to load or unload, preventing accidents caused by miscommunication.
